5.3 magnitude earthquake hits Malta

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Malta early Saturday morning, shaking thousands.

The earthquake was felt in several parts of Malta around 12:20 a.m., which sparked a flurry of comments on social media, despite the late hour.

People reported being awakened by shaking beds and furniture in southern towns such as Birchbuca to others at the other end of the country, such as Melia or Ipoe, Gozo.

The quake struck southeast of the island, 129 kilometers off the coast, near where several other quakes struck during the beginning of this year.

The tremor was also felt in neighboring Sicily and Libya.

Calculations of its magnitude varied somewhat: by Saturday morning, the Seismic Monitoring and Research Group at the University of Malta reported the overnight quake as a magnitude 5.1, while the USGS classified it as a magnitude 5.5 event.

Hours later, shortly after six in the morning on Saturday, another tremor was recorded near the Libyan coast. The quake measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, according to the university’s Seismology and Research Group.

The last earthquake on Earth was reported on April 11 when a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck about 100 kilometers south of Malta.

Malta experienced a wave of seismic activity at the beginning of the year, with dozens of earthquakes recorded over the course of weeks.

And while the tremors have caused some concern because of their frequency, seismologists say such periodic tremors are common and should not cause any concern.

At the time, local experts said the seismic activity would likely continue for several weeks or months.
