Kīlauea Peak seismic rates rise overnight

(BIVN) – The Kīlauea volcano did not erupt, but scientists say seismic rates in the summit area increased overnight, and an inflationary tendency was measured this morning.

No active lava has been observed at Kīlauea since March 7, 2023. The USGS Volcano Alert Level remains at ADVISORY.

In its daily update, the USGS’ Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that earthquake rates in the summit area increased overnight, and that “summit instruments were tracking an accelerating inflationary tendency this morning.”

From Saturday’s update posted at 8:51 a.m. HST:

Two HVO inclinometers, at Uēkahuna and southwest of the summit in Sand Hill, tracked the accelerating inflationary tendency this morning. Small earthquake waves have occurred infrequently under Halemaʻumaʻu, Keanakākoi Crater, and the southern edge of Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera) since April 16, and last night the seismicity rate increased in the summit area. The most recent emission rate of sulfur dioxide (SO2) was measured at about 75 tons per day on April 26.

The scientists added that no unusual activity was observed along the eastern rift zone or the southwest rift zone.
