A 4.6-magnitude earthquake hits Paktia province, Afghanistan

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck 39 km northeast of the city of Gardez in the Afghan province of Paktia, Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The 4.6-magnitude quake occurred at 5:24 a.m. local time, at a depth of 5 kilometers on Tuesday and had its epicenter in Syed Karam district of Afghanistan’s Paktia province, according to the Indian National Center of Seismology.

There have been no reports of injuries so far.

According to official reports, natural disasters have increased in recent months, including earthquakes, landslides, torrential rains and floods, leaving huge material and human damage.

According to Shafiullah Rahimi, spokesperson for the State Ministry of Natural Disaster Management, 29 people died in 31 districts, while the recent earthquake and flash floods from March 21 to April 20 injured more than 105 people.

He added that natural disasters caused financial losses, including the death of 848 heads of livestock, the destruction of 155 residential homes, the partial destruction of 1,242 homes, and the destruction of 7,106 dunums of agricultural land.

Afghanistan is a country prone to disasters, including earthquakes. More than 200 people were injured and at least 19 died when a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan in March.
