Ghana grants tax exemption for the purchase of seismic and weather monitoring equipment

Ghana’s legislature has approved a tax exemption of 1.6 million Japanese yen (US $ 277,410) to obtain earthquake and weather monitoring devices in the West African country.

Parliament passed the approval on the basis of an ongoing radio astronomical project in Ghana and the location of the Kuntunse Earth Observation Satellite Group receiving station for the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI).

The project is also a bilateral partnership between Ghana and South Africa. The GSSTI of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), in cooperation with the Square Kilometer Matrix in South Africa, will establish a facility to train students in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and space science in Ghana.

In a report by Joy Online, the head of the Finance Committee, Dr. Mark Asibi Yeboah, said that the project would help improve space expertise in Ghana, promote human capacity development, and spread in other sectors.

Addressing Parliament to explain the importance of the project, Dr. Yabou said, “An integral part of the telescope facility is the reference receiver for the global satellite navigation system, an antenna at a geodesic level, a seismic system for the study of weather, earthquakes, and plate tectonics.
