Erdogan secures a strong victory in the earthquake-affected areas of Turkey

In the region hit by devastating double earthquakes in February, turnout exceeded 80% in Sunday’s parliamentary and presidential elections.

Hatay, the province worst affected by the earthquakes, saw a slight decrease of about 6% in voter turnout compared to the 2018 general elections, with a final turnout of 83.16%. Of the 1,062,000 eligible voters, about 180,000 did not cast a ballot.

With regard to the presidential elections, the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emerged first in 8 out of 11 provinces, while his main rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu led 3 provinces.

The devastating earthquakes, which occurred on February 6, with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6, wreaked havoc in the southern province of Marash and affected 11 other provinces in southern and southeastern Turkey, as well as parts of northern Syria.

Official government figures put a staggering death toll of over 50,000 people, with more than 227,000 buildings either destroyed or severely damaged in the affected areas.

The latest UN report highlights the dire situation in these earthquake-affected areas, with persistent challenges exacerbating the crisis. The region continues to face hardships caused by heavy rains and persistent aftershocks, hampering relief efforts.

As a result, approximately 1.6 million people are still living in makeshift shelters or tents, and have difficulty accessing basic services and basic living conditions.
