Tsunami warning lifted after strong earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean – DW – 05/19/2023

A tsunami warning has been lifted for several Pacific states after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands in French territory on Friday. The epicenter is located in southwestern Fiji, northern New Zealand and eastern Australia.

“Based on all available data, the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now passed,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was detected at a depth of 37 kilometers (23 miles), 340 kilometers east of Fao, New Caledonia.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, a tsunami measuring 8 centimeters was observed in New Caledonia, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

A government official said evacuation orders were also issued in New Caledonia’s coastal areas. An AFP journalist reported that at least one beach had been evacuated.

What is the impact of the earthquake?

A tsunami was initially predicted in Vanuatu, and smaller waves were expected in Fiji, New Caledonia, Kiribati and New Zealand.

Authorities in Vanuatu have advised citizens to evacuate coastal areas and move to higher ground.

The bureau said a marine alert had been issued for Australia’s Lord Howe Island. But she later said that “there is no threat to the land on the Australian mainland or Australian territory.”

In the aftermath of the earthquake, New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency issued a tsunami warning.

“We expect New Zealand coastal areas to experience unusually strong currents and beach surges,” the agency said.
