An earthquake hits residents of southwestern Sydney

It’s something Sydneysiders have rarely witnessed, but today residents of the city’s southwest were hit by a small earthquake.

The 3.1-magnitude earthquake hit Abyan region around 2 pm.

The Australian Geological Sciences said the quake was nearly three kilometers below the surface.

A few kilometers away, local residents in the small village of Douglas Park said they felt a tremor when the small earthquake hit.

“It was a very loud bang and it literally lifted me up,” a local woman told 9News.

Another woman said, “The house shook… I literally got scared because the windows shook and everything.”

Another local joked that she believed it was doomsday,

Other residents stated that the earthquake caused dogs in the area to bark.

People have also reported shaking in Rosemeadow, Ambarvale, and even in Wollongong.

Geoscience Australia said the region has experienced 48 small earthquakes in the past decade, with the largest in 2017.
