Paktika earthquake victims still struggling a year later

A year has passed since the devastating earthquake that struck Paktika province, leaving more than 400 dead and about 1,700 injured.

The earthquake, which struck three districts of Paktika, destroyed more than 7,000 homes.

However, even a year later, many of those affected by the earthquake still face challenges.

According to official figures, there are currently up to 5,000 families living in tents and caves.

“It has been a long time since we lived in a tent. We ask them to build houses for us or give us money, and we will build them ourselves,” said Sakhi Marjan, a resident of Paktika’s Gayan district. TOLOnews reporter.

We have been left to take care of orphans, we don’t have a home, and the UNHCR has yet to build a home for us,” said Fazlur Rahman, a resident of Gayan district.

Some earthquake victims said that despite pledges and millions of dollars in aid, they still lack food, clean water, and medical care.

They demanded the officials of the Islamic Emirate and humanitarian institutions to fulfill their promises.

“We ask them to build this road for us, as the roads are destroyed, and we cannot drive and pass easily,” said Abdul Munir, a resident of Gayan district.

Meanwhile, doctors in Jian district said that as the weather warmed, malnutrition and tuberculosis infection increased among children and women in this district. As many as 20 children and women go to health centers every day, according to doctors.

Paktika governor Faizullah Jamal said 2,500 homes are now being built, some of which have already been completed.

“We are trying to enlist the help of international organizations in all regions including Gayan, Bermal and Ziruk,” Jamal told TOLOnews.

The devastating earthquake that struck the Paktika districts of Gayan and Bermal one year ago today has left 406 people dead and 1,685 injured.
