Phivolcs records spike in Mayon volcanic earthquakes

MANILA, Philippines — The state’s seismologists said Monday that Mayon Volcano has seen an uptick in volcanic earthquakes totaling 109 in the space of 24 hours.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the number of volcanic tremors between 5:00 AM on July 9 and 5:00 AM on July 10.

The most recent volcanic earthquakes were 26 more earthquakes that were reported during the previous period.

A total of 325 magmatic events and 943 metric tons of SO2 flux were also reported in the recent period.

Also, over the same period, 19 dome collapse pyroclastic density streams (PDCs) lasted from one to three minutes, while four PDCs collapsing in front of lava and one pyroclastic collapse were also recorded.

PDC refers to a mixture of fragmented volcanic particles, hot gases, and ash that rush down volcanic slopes or precipitate outward from an upstream vent at high velocities.

Mayon Volcano has been under Alert Level 3 since June 8, with unrest continuing for a few months based on the Volcano Monitor’s observations.
