A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hits the Caribbean in the Atlantic Ocean

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake has been reported in the Atlantic Ocean this afternoon on several Caribbean islands.

The Puerto Rico Earthquake Network said the quake occurred at around 4:28 p.m. The epicenter of this earthquake was at latitude: 20.1 North and longitude: 61.1 West at a depth of 10 km.

In its report, the network said there was no tsunami warning, warning, or watch for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) also said the 6.6-magnitude quake occurred 227 kilometers northeast of Codrington, Antigua and Barbuda at around 4:28 pm at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Not long after the earthquake, people took to social media to see if anyone felt an earthquake.

The British Virgin Islands Disaster Management (BVI DDM) said the earthquake was felt in the Virgin Islands by residents.

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) said in a report that a moderate to large earthquake with a magnitude of M6.6 occurred approximately 350 km northeast of Montserrat at 16:29 local time (20:29 UTC). He points out that there is no danger of a tsunami from the tectonic earthquake, and it is not related to the Soufriere Hills volcano.

MVO adds that it is aware of reports of the sensors being felt on the island and in neighboring St. Kitts and Guadeloupe.

Meanwhile, the Saint Martin Meteorological Department reports that the quake occurred 190 miles northeast of Saint Martin.

The UWI Earthquake Research Center (UWI SRC) in Trinidad and Tobago said the event occurred outside its monitoring area but was felt on some islands. It reported the event as a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that occurred around 4:28 pm at a depth of -25 km.
