North Korea: Defectors prepare for new lives in South Korea – BBC News

South Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to welcome North Korean defectors. The number of people fleeing to the South has dropped dramatically in the last decade. The number of North Koreans making the difficult and dangerous journey to South Korea – risking death if caught – has fallen sharply in recent years. But the few who arrive in the country to escape poverty and repression are joined by refugees from South Korea, about two hours from Seoul, South Korea’s capital. When they arrive in South Korea they are sent for three months. It’s called Hanawon, or to give it its full title, the North Korean Refugee Settlement Center. Kim Sung-hui, who graduated from Hanawon more than a decade ago, described how “the first night abroad is memorable for all defectors. I felt such relief when I was finally in South Korea.
