No injuries or damage were reported in Kodiak as a result of the 7.8 earthquake local news

A tsunami alert triggered by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake caused many local Kodiak residents to seek safety on high ground Tuesday evening for fear of the devastating ocean waves that never arrived. The warning was canceled later that night, without any injuries or damage being reported.

EOC received a preliminary warning of the tsunami at 10:13 pm, with a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, which was later upgraded to 7.8 degrees.

School principal Larry Ledux said that after receiving a tsunami warning, the school staff raced to various schools across the city to help residents accommodate.

“Our doors were open before the first warning siren started,” said Lido.

He estimated that about 300 people were evacuated to the gymnasium in high school and over 100 people sat in their cars in the parking lot, while school personnel distributed face masks.

Ledux described the scene as a garden, where people behave calmly and sit in small groups. He pointed out that Kodiak residents coped well with tsunami fears, adding that tsunami warnings are typical of the region.

“I did a lot of this business, but we have a large group of people,” said Lido. “Kodiak shines when there is a challenge like this.”

Although many people also searched for safety on Mount Pilar, the director of the Kodiak Emergency Services Council does not recommend this area for evacuation.

“It is a different story in the summer, but in the winter there are many dangers,” he said, adding that people will be subject to cold temperatures no matter how long the warning of evacuation and tsunami is.

Kodiak EOC has received four overnight updates from State EOC and has been in continuous contact with the National Tsunami Warning Center.

The Kodiak Police Department sounded the sirens and sounded car horns to wake the sleeping population, while the city fire department, whose station is in the tsunami flood zone, moved its large equipment to the municipal airport for safety.
