3 dead, including a child, after a plane crashed in the West Jordan neighborhood, with six accidents

West Jordan • Alyssa Sigaro is accustomed to hearing planes flying over her home, a few miles from the South Valley Regional Airport. So, when I heard on a Saturday afternoon, I didn’t think of anything.

Then came the high collapse, a major boom that shook her entire home in western Jordan. Cigaro believed it was an earthquake, but a look from the backyard revealed thick black smoke and flame. I ran towards it, and a first aid kit was at hand.

When I got there, a lot of the neighborhood had already arrived, trying to help. Cigarroa remembers “high pitched screams” of the victims and all the smoke.

The Piper PA-32 – a small single-engine plane – crashed around 1:40 pm in a neighborhood near 8,800 south and 4,000 west. Six people were on board, and the police stated that three had died.

The accident destroyed three houses, seriously injuring an elderly home owner.

Jordan West Police spokesman JC Holt said the pilot died in addition to a woman and a 9-month-old child. Another woman on board was in a critical condition, and a two-year-old boy settled Saturday evening. A 12-year-old passenger was injured in the accident and was treated and discharged from hospital.

It is not clear what caused the crash, but another police spokeswoman, Jennifer Worthen, said it happened shortly after take-off from South Valley Regional Airport.

Veronica Taylor said she was in a nearby park when she saw a plane that “was very low, and it was very noisy.” She referred to her son.

Taylor said that she continued to watch and thought herself that the plane needed to rise. It was too low.

“Then, suddenly, she disappeared, in my view,” Taylor said, adding that she saw “a large flame and a large column of smoke” as it crashed.

She said that before the crash, she noticed that it was making noise that seemed to her as if the engine was suffering.

Wirthen said that the Federal Aviation Administration was at the site and began its investigation Saturday afternoon. The National Transportation Safety Authority will investigate the accident.

Worthen said the community quickly gathered to help people on the plane and someone inside a house.

Residents said the neighborhood was tight, and on Saturday noon as dozens gathered in the streets in the aftermath of the accident, they discussed what they saw and exchanged information about a woman in one of the houses that were hit. Some put grass chairs in the shade while they wait.

Segaro said she did not remember having decided to run into the accident. I just did, like an “fight or flight” response.

She said, “Once I saw what happened, I just got a first aid kit and went.”

When she got to the yard, she said that she spoke to a woman who had suffered severe burns and had deep wounds on her legs and arms. As she saw two children, she thought it was a little girl. She thought the other one was a teenager.

Before the paramedics arrived, 21-year-old Sigaro, who is studying to be a nurse, filled the victims’ wounds with gauze to stop the bleeding. She did her best to help when the medics arrived.

Then, after the ambulances took everyone out, and the firefighters extinguished the fire, she went home to try to tackle what she had just seen.
