Thousands are still missing as the search for survivors continues

Venezuelans continue to search for survivors under the rubble of buildings destroyed by two powerful earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday.

Health Minister Carlos Alvardo said in an interview with state television on Thursday that at least 235 people had died as a result of the earthquakes. Earlier in the day, officials said more than 1,500 people were reported injured, while 200 others were known to be trapped.

But the death toll is expected to rise as more people remain missing. A website created to help Venezuelans find missing loved ones says it has now received tens of thousands of reports of people no one has heard of.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) expected the death toll to exceed 1,000, at 91%, but said the number could be higher. These forecasts are based on the number of residents exposed to the strongest effects of earthquakes, and the extent to which their homes are at risk.

The crisis is further exacerbated by the lack of resources. One activist who was in some of the worst-hit areas of Caracas said he could hear people screaming from under the rubble, but first responders did not have the heavy equipment needed to rescue them.

The Canadian government has pledged an initial $5 million in humanitarian assistance to support emergency relief efforts in Venezuela.

The funds will support “trusted and experienced partners” on the ground providing emergency assistance in the country, such as health and sanitation services, as well as protection and logistics services.

“We are seeing schools, hospitals and infrastructure completely destroyed, leaving people without food, shelter and basic necessities of life,” Foreign Minister Anita Anand told CBC News. “We wanted, just 12 hours after learning of this devastating set of earthquakes, to provide initial humanitarian aid that will be delivered by trusted organizations on the ground.”
