Old St. Paul doors reopen after earthquake reinforcement

Old St Paul’s reopened after closing for 15 months due to the earthquake.

The doors are open, the walls have been reinforced, and the only thing missing from Old St. Paul’s Cathedral is 154 years of dust settled on top of the rafters.

The cathedral, built on the Pipitea Pā site, was closed on May 3, 2019 to reinforce the earthquake.

On Tuesday, the doors opened again with the presence of about 80 people at the official opening. The public can return to the site on Wednesday.

Grant Robertson, the Secretary of the Arts, Culture and Heritage, who officially reopened the site, said that Waiwira, or spirit, of Old St. Paul was clear to walk through the doors.

“For me, this is not the first time I have walked down this path, as I have had a civil union.

“I think I, like many Wellington children, have experienced moments of great love, hope here, and moments of tremendous loss as well.”

He also admitted that the site stands where Pipitea Pa was once.

“Of course, like most situations at the time, the land was eventually taken over for other purposes, not necessarily with all the rights recognized at the time. I want to recognize these confessions today.”

The wooden cathedral was first opened in 1866, and since then it has been used as a church and event space.

Marian Hobbs, Chair of the New Zealand Heritage Authority Boher Towneja, said Old St. Paul was her favorite church in the country.

With the exception of some minor details, it was impossible to know that the building underwent internal reinforcement.

One of the additions to space was the names of those who worked on the reinforcement had been concealed in the foundations, something which Hobbes said he mimics the original builders from 1865-1866, who concealed their names on a secret plate.

The project brought the church up to 90 percent of the code, and cost $ 3.28 million, which New Zealand Heritage Area Director Jimmy Jacobs said was within the normal range for a heritage project.

The project was funded by the New Zealand Lottery Grant Board, Old St Paul’s Friends, Stout Trust, and Wellington Community Trust, as well as from donations from around the world.

It was originally expected to take between eight and 10 months to complete, but it ended up taking 15 months, due to the closure of Covid-19 and the discovery of asbestos on two occasions.

Jacobs said it was exciting to open the field again.

“We have worked on this space for several years, the building has been closed for 15 months, so it’s great that the project is completed, and it’s wonderful that the building is resilient to the future.”

The cathedral was used by Anglican society until the 1960s, before being replaced by the new St. Paul’s Church. Since then, it has been used as a space for events, holding everything from weddings and funerals to concerts.
