Los Angeles is hit by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake

Homes across Los Angeles were shaken by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake occurred just before two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, following severe storms that struck the city and the entire western coast. The impacts lasted for several seconds, causing some buildings around the city to move violently.

The epicenter was 6.21 miles from Malibu, California, and was later downgraded to a magnitude 4.5 earthquake.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) warned the public to prepare for shocks immediately. “If you're inside when the shaking starts: Drop, cover, wait!” I wrote the force on X.

“Protect your head + neck while taking shelter under sturdy furniture or near a sturdy interior wall, away from windows and doorways until the shaking stops.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) later reported that there was no tsunami risk due to the quake.

Over the past week, Los Angeles has seen more than 500 mudslides and flash floods caused by two weather systems, causing major devastation across California.

The quake also comes shortly after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the world's largest active volcano in Hawaii earlier on Friday.

Items were out of shelves in nearby towns but no major damage was immediately reported after the incident that struck Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Authorities said a tsunami was not expected.

The quake, which the USGS initially reported as a magnitude of 6.3, was centered on the south side of Mauna Loa at a depth of 23 miles (37 kilometers) and 1.3 miles (2 kilometers) southwest of Pahala.
