United Nations: Herat earthquake hits pregnant Afghan women hard

According to a joint report issued by the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, the European Union, and the Asian Development Bank, the recent earthquake that struck Herat Province affected 275,000 people, most of whom were pregnant women.

The joint report of these organizations, published on Wednesday, stated that this earthquake caused direct material damage worth $217 million, and caused other damage worth $78.9 million.

According to this report, more than 275,000 people were affected by the earthquake in Herat Province, including 17,358 pregnant women, 17,146 children, 3,976 families with severe disabilities, 3,207 elderly families, 6,806 families headed by women, 3,176 people suffering from chronic diseases, 147,000 children without Age 18 years.

According to these organizations, the highest cost of this earthquake was incurred by women-led companies.

According to the statistics of these organizations, in the earthquakes that occurred on October 7, 11, and 15, more than 1,500 people were killed and more than 2,600 others were injured, which requires $402.9 million to reconstruct the affected parts of this governorate.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also stressed in its report the devastating consequences of the Herat earthquake, noting that women and children bore the brunt of this natural disaster and need urgent support.

Afghanistan has been described as the “most dangerous country for mothers” in Asia, with concerns raised about pregnant women's lack of access to health facilities, shortages of healthcare workers, and medicines in the country.

The United Nations Population Fund previously confirmed in a report that about 7,500 pregnant women were affected by the recent earthquakes that struck Herat.
