Experts say multiple earthquakes in Illinois are not a cause for concern

A US Geological Survey expert said the possibility that the quakes could lead to a larger, more devastating quake is small.

PINCKNEYVILLE, Ill. — The three earthquakes that have struck southern Illinois in the past few months are no cause for concern, according to the region's top earthquake expert.

Although the quakes occurred relatively close to each other in terms of physical proximity and timing, Central and Eastern Region Coordinator for the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, Tom Pratt, said this is not completely out of the ordinary.

“In fact, small earthquakes like this occur from time to time in southern Illinois. Therefore, we do not consider them out of the ordinary,” Pratt said. “Three of them are very close together in time which is somewhat unusual, but if the earthquakes are randomly distributed in time, it is not surprising that a few of them would be closer together than most.”

Geologists don't have a good explanation for why the three earthquakes occurred in southern Illinois. The area is located north of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where earthquakes have been occurring for several thousand years, but Pratt said there is no direct connection between the area and recent quakes.

“The probability that these will lead to a larger, more destructive earthquake (i.e. are they primary aftershocks?) is small, but not impossible,” Pratt said.
