BBC investigation: Israeli troops accused of beating and humiliating Gaza hospital staff | BBC News

Palestinian doctors in Gaza have told BBC reporters they have been arrested, blindfolded, forced to strip and repeatedly beaten by Israeli troops following an attack on the hospital. Hospital doctor Ahmed Abu Sabha Nasser described being tortured by Israeli forces. He said he was detained for a week, set on muzzled dogs and had his hand broken by an Israeli soldier. His account echoes that of other doctors who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. They told the BBC they were humiliated, beaten, doused with cold water and forced to kneel in stressful positions for hours. They said they had been detained for days before being released. The IDF raided Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis in February 2024, saying that intelligence indicated that members of Hamas were there. They also said that the Israeli hostages taken by Hamas on October 7 have been kept in the hospital. Some of the hostages themselves have said that they were kept by Nasser. Hamas has denied that its fighters operate inside medical facilities. The BBC provided details of allegations of abuse to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). They did not directly respond to questions about those accounts, nor did they deny specific claims of abuse. However, they denied harming medical staff during the military operation at the hospital.
