San Jose defender Bruno Wilson has had his fine and suspension overturned

NEW YORK (AP) — An independent panel has overturned the one-game suspension and fined San Jose Earthquakes defenseman Bruno Wilson for a red card issued during a game at the Portland Timbers.

Major League Soccer announced on Friday the decision of the three-person committee, which includes representatives from US Soccer and Canada Soccer along with an appointed member of the Professional Referees Organization. San Jose appealed the red card.

The Earthquakes were leading 2-0 on Wednesday when Wilson was sent off with a red card in the 72nd minute for a handball inside the box. Portland's Evander scored on the penalty kick and the Timbers scored three more goals to win 4-2 with San Jose playing a man down.

Wilson can now play for the Earthquakes at home against Orlando City on Saturday.

“Good news today to know that he is available to compete tomorrow. I won't go into too many details about the whole review, but it just shows that VAR and refereeing still have a lot of room for improvement, like all of us in the game. Take responsibility and reverse the color,” Quakes coach Luchi Gonzalez said. “Red, it's great to hear that (the Professional Referees' Organization) is going to improve.”
