A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook part of the Hautes-Pyrénées region this morning (May 21) at around 11:30.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 19 kilometers south of Tarbes (Occitanie).

Residents of the nearby towns of Lourdes, Bagneres de Bigorre and Cauteret also reported feeling the ground shaking and hearing the sound of vibrations.

The BCSF Renass (French Central Seismological Bureau) said the quake and any earthquake higher than 3.5 on the Richter scale is considered “significant”. You can check the report here.

The cause of the earthquake is being investigated but it is not uncommon in the area. There were actually other imperceptible earthquakes during the night, much lower on the Richter scale.

Hundreds of earthquakes are recorded every year in the Pyrenees, although they are rarely of this magnitude.

Three schools were evacuated as a precaution: College Bagnier du Bigorre, Sarsan School, and Luz School. No injuries were reported, although a crack appeared in an office building at De Luz College.

BCSF Renass told BFM it is too early to know if there is serious damage. She warned against repeating the matter, and asked parents not to come to pick up their children until further notice.
