King Salman Relief Center launches food program in earthquake-affected areas in Syria and Turkey
RIYADH: As part of its goal to generate at least 50% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030, Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in diversifying its energy mix towards renewables to fulfill its pledge to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable development.
To enhance public understanding of renewable energy technologies and advance the goals of Vision 2030, King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy launched the Mishkat Interactive Center for Atomic and Renewable Energy in Riyadh in 2017.
“The National Renewable Energy Program, with all its implemented and ongoing projects, truly reflects the extent of the success of this strategic initiative in achieving Vision 2030,” Reham Al-Dous, Director of Content and Program Development at the Center, told Arab News.
winds
Saudi Arabia has huge potential for wind energy, especially in the northwestern and coastal regions. The Kingdom has set a target of producing 50 gigawatts of wind energy by 2030.
In 2021, Saudi Arabia opened its first commercial wind farm, the 400 MW Dumat Al Jandal project, currently the largest in the Middle East. Other large-scale wind projects are in the pipeline.

Solar
As one of the world’s sunniest countries, Saudi Arabia has an abundance of solar energy resources. The Kingdom aims to install 50 gigawatts of solar power by 2030.
Major projects include the 300MW Sakaka solar power plant, the 420MW Sudair solar power plant, and the 2GW Shuaiba solar project. Saudi Arabia is also exploring innovative applications such as floating solar farms on its reservoirs.

The Sakaka Solar Power Plant in Al-Jouf was inaugurated in 2021 and uses photovoltaic technology. The plant consists of more than 1.2 million solar panels spread over an area of 6 square kilometers, producing low-cost energy at just $0.023 per kilowatt-hour.
In addition to using photovoltaic cells to capture sunlight, another method is solar thermal energy, where mirrors focus sunlight in a specific spot to collect and concentrate it, allowing for the production of very high temperatures, which are used to generate electricity.
Hydropower
Although Saudi Arabia's hydropower potential is limited by limited moving water bodies, the country does have some small-scale hydroelectric facilities.
The Bisha Dam in the southwest generates about 2.1 megawatts of electricity. Saudi Arabia is also studying the possibility of establishing hydroelectric energy storage projects.

geothermal heat
Saudi Arabia has begun exploring its geothermal energy resources, especially in the volcanic areas of the Hijaz and Asir mountains.
Pilot projects are currently underway to assess the feasibility of geothermal power generation in the Kingdom. Initial estimates indicate the potential for generating up to 3 gigawatts of geothermal power.

the biography
Saudi Arabia has made great strides in developing its bioenergy sector, with a primary focus on biofuels.
The Kingdom aims to produce 9.5 million liters of bioethanol and 0.3 million liters of biodiesel annually by 2030. Projects to convert agricultural and municipal waste into energy are also being explored.

Wind, biofuels, geothermal, and solar thermal energy use the kinetic energy produced by these resources to drive turbines, either directly or by heating water to create steam, thus generating electricity.
The Ministry of Energy in Saudi Arabia has been the driving force behind the shift towards renewable energy in the country.
This section contains relevant reference points, placed in the (Opinion Field).
The Ministry has set clean energy targets, launched competitive tenders for projects, and collaborated with local and international stakeholders to develop a robust renewable energy sector.
Through strategic policies, dedicated funding and collaborative efforts, the Ministry of Energy has played an effective role in positioning the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a regional leader in the global transition towards sustainable energy generation.
Did you know?
Saudi Arabia is developing some of the largest solar energy projects in the world, including the Sakaka plant in Al-Jouf.
The Kingdom is developing large-scale wind farms, such as the 400-megawatt Dumat Al-Jandal wind energy project.
It is also exploring the potential of “green hydrogen” – produced using renewable energy sources.
The Ministry’s comprehensive approach to integrating renewable energy has been crucial in diversifying the Kingdom’s energy mix and securing its long-term energy future.
However, much of this success is due to Saudi Arabia's geographical location, said Aldous of Mishkat Interactive.
She said that the Kingdom is characterised by an abundance of renewable energy sources, noting that solar energy and wind energy are the main sources of green energy with great potential.
