Two of the Pompeii victims were actually killed by an earthquake.

In Peacock’s new Roman gladiator series, Those About to Die, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, games aren’t the only cause of death on screen. Midway through the season, Mount Vesuvius erupts, destroying the nearby cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, sending refugees flooding into Rome and killing tens of thousands.

The vast majority of Vesuvius’ victims died from inhaling ash, other particles, and toxic gases; from exposure to heat; or from being overwhelmed by pyroclastic flows. Whatever their manner of death, it was often the direct result of typical volcanic phenomena. But recently, researchers have discovered two previously unknown victims who died not from the eruption but from severe trauma when their home collapsed around them.

An analysis of the site and a chronological reconstruction of the events concluded that the two victims may have died during a simultaneous eruption before the actual eruption began. This was discovered during excavation work at the Chaste Lovers' House and was published in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science.

Simultaneous earthquake kills two as Mount Vesuvius erupts

While the ash, lava and toxic gases released by Vesuvius were absolutely deadly, the simultaneous earthquakes also caused their fair share of destruction. A series of earthquakes were reported in the days leading up to the eruption, and researchers believe a synchronous earthquake (one that occurred at the same time as the eruption) killed at least two people.

In one room of the excavation site, two skeletons were found with crushing injuries from a collapsed wall. Analysis of skeletal features indicates that the victims were aged 55 or older and were probably male. The first victim was found with more than 20 rib fractures on each side of the chest, and crushing injuries to the bones of the face, pelvis and limbs. Taken together, these injuries are consistent with being crushed by a large piece of falling wall. Death was likely instantaneous.

The second victim had fewer fractures on the left side and appeared to have been buried only at the level of the legs. “The plaster fragments were in direct contact with the right femur and released red pigments that stained the surface,” the study authors wrote. The victim was found huddled together with his left hand protecting his head, suggesting that they were aware of the danger and trying to protect themselves.

The eruption began at about 1:00 p.m. when a column of ash, pumice, and smoke rose into the air and fell on the city. It filled the streets, spilled through doors and windows, and streamed into buildings where people were taking shelter. The ash continued to fill the city for about 18 hours, and researchers believe it was during this time that the earthquake struck and the wall collapsed.

The next day, the city was engulfed in lava flows carrying deadly clouds of poisonous gas, suffocating everyone who remained. By then, the victims in the House of Chaste Lovers were already dead. Ancient Rome, circa 79 AD, was full of exciting and terrifying ways to die, and Vesuvius was just one of them.
