Redmond School District Protects Two Schools From Earthquakes | Redmond News

An earthquake seems impossible until the ground starts shaking, but we know it's inevitable in the Pacific Northwest.

Two schools in the Redmond School District are currently being prepared for future earthquakes, including John Tuck Elementary School.

“The steel structure that is being built into the building actually takes a lot of the support from the original structure,” said project manager Chad Frank. “That structure is what will keep it attached to the foundation in the event of an earthquake.”

The idea is to preserve the history and charm of the school while adding an extra layer of protection in key areas like the gym and cafeteria.

“It won't look much different. You'll see some exposed metal inside. We've been able to incorporate that into our new frame that we've put here,” Frank said.

Work is expected to be completed before the start of the school year this fall.

“The district is really investing in these opportunities to create safe buildings, and improve buildings in the way that they can, without using taxpayer dollars.”

Along with John Tuck Elementary School, Tumalo Community School is getting similar upgrades.
