Inside the conversation that helped the San Jose Earthquakes defeat Chivas

SANTA CLARA – The San Jose Earthquakes players looked anxious as they headed to the sidelines after the referee blew the final whistle to signal that a penalty shootout would be next.

As the League Cup match against Chivas went to penalties after the Mexican side scored a late stoppage-time equaliser to draw 1-1 – another heavy blow in a season full of them for the Quakes – San Jose players reacted in different ways.

Some appeared to argue in vain with another official, some pointed at each other and others looked desperate as they left the field at Levi's Stadium on Saturday night.

“There were a lot of emotions after that, a lot of frustration for our team,” Earthquakes coach Ian Russell said. “I had to get them together and tell them that everyone needed to calm down.”

So when he gathered them all together, Russell didn't hesitate to say his words.

“We played a great game,” he told his players, before adding: “But we need to stay calm.”

Eventually, the calm turned to celebration in San Jose when the Earthquakes, who are bottom of the MLS standings, recovered to win a 4-3 penalty shootout in the League Cup opener.

Before the victorious finish, San Jose players had good reason to be angry.

After leading for more than 90 minutes thanks to an early goal by Jeremy Ebobisse and solid defending, Chivas dazzled a tournament-record crowd of 50,675 – who took over South Bay Stadium – and destroyed the Earthquakes when Roberto Alvarado equalised in the 98th minute.

Chivas spent the previous 20 minutes pressuring the San Jose defence, but brave goalkeeper Daniel managed to overcome bumps and aerial fouls from the opposition to keep a clean sheet.

It turned out it wasn't supernatural.

Daniel could only watch his defence concede a goal for about 30 seconds before stoppage time ended.

In a season that saw the Earthquakes lose 19 games, draw two and win just four in the MLS season, the defeat in the final game was just another miserable chapter in a terrible season.

Different competition, same sad result, right?

Well, maybe not. Once all the players and coaches formed a circle at the short break before the penalty shootout, Russell's calm message had the desired effect on his team.

“We were a little disappointed with the fact that we conceded a goal,” Ebobisse admitted. “We wanted to finish the game and find a way to do it. We realised that there were a lot of things going on and now we needed to play the game we had in front of us.”

The Earthquakes converted four of their five shots, while Chivas missed two. Former Earthquakes player Cade Coyle sent a penalty kick metres over the bar, while a calm Daniel saved another to deny Chivas a win.

“They were so emotional that it wouldn't have gone well if they hadn't gotten together and talked about it,” Russell said.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
