PICKENS Corporation, SC (WSPA) – Sunday morning, thousands of people woke up on the ground shaking underneath.

The largest earthquake in North Carolina since 1916 struck Sparta around 8:07 in the morning

People in the northern part of the state said that people in North Carolina weren’t the only ones shivering.

Greenville resident Jeff Young used to live in California, so earthquakes are nothing new to him.

Young said: “This morning at home, just after eight o’clock, I felt like a bang and then the apartment building shook a little, so I immediately knew what it was, that it was an earthquake.”

Derek Guest, who also lives in the Greenville area, didn’t know what happened at first.

“I was just sitting at the kitchen table because I was staying with my mom, and it felt like under my chair it was like rumbling or moving and I was feeling kind of strange,” Guist said.

“Although she had felt an earthquake before, this earthquake still scared her and her friend,” said Tara Harup, who was in Charlotte this morning, which is about an hour and a half away from where the earthquake struck.

“I was sitting and I felt a tremor and took a breath and asked her you know, what did you feel an earthquake,” Harup said. She should look around and hear the glass creaking and shaking. ”

Pierce Womack, deputy director of Pickens County’s emergency department, says you never know when an earthquake might strike, but there are precautions you can take to keep yourself safe.

“Make sure your heavy items like appliances, refrigerators and things like that are safe,” Womack said. “Heavy pictures too.” “Any big things in your home, make sure they are safe and put them away to where they will not affect anyone if they fall.”

He says that if there is an earthquake of this magnitude to hit the northern region, his team is ready to help people recover.

“We will help with any power outages, and any roads that may be damaged or impassable,” Womack said. “We will intervene to help with that vital infrastructure and get things back on track as soon as possible.”
