5.7-magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Taiwan

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Yilan County at 5:06 p.m. yesterday, the Central Meteorological Administration said.

The quake struck off the coast 38.3 kilometers southeast of Yilan County, at a depth of 9 kilometers, data from the Central Water Administration showed.

The quake's intensity, which measures the actual impact of a seismic event, was highest in parts of Yilan County, where it reached “weak 5” on Taiwan's 7-level earthquake intensity scale.

Data from the Central Earthquake Administration showed the quake registered a magnitude of 4 in parts of Hualien, Taoyuan and New Taipei, and a magnitude of 3 in parts of Taichung, Nantou, Taipei, Hsinchu and Miaoli.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Wu Chenfu, director of the earthquake center under the Central Seismological Administration, said yesterday that the main earthquake and aftershocks were caused by the collision of the Eurasian tectonic plate with the Philippine Sea plate, adding that aftershocks with a magnitude of 4.5 or more may occur in the coming days.

Data from the center showed three consecutive earthquakes since 5 p.m., the first at a depth of just 9 kilometers, according to Wu.

He added that residents in the northern and central regions felt the quake more strongly, because its epicenter was off the northeastern coast, especially those who were in high-rise buildings in Taipei at the time.

“The quake was an independent event and not an aftershock of the 7.2-magnitude quake that struck off the coast of Hualien County on April 3,” Wu said. “The epicenter was in areas where 70 percent of Taiwan's earthquakes occur. Given the recent afternoon's heavy thunderstorms, residents in mountainous areas need to be on the alert for landslides and mudflows in the next few days.”
