Council staff move to allow Hawera base to be reinforced to resist earthquakes

South Taranaki District Council staff and services are set to move for up to six months while its Hawera headquarters is reinforced to withstand earthquakes.

Chief executive Fiona Aitken said the building currently met the minimum seismic standard of 34% New Building Standard (NBS), but as it was the Civil Defence emergency operations centre for the area, it was required to meet higher structural requirements and be 80% NBS.

“We need to ensure that in the event of a major disaster we will be able to use this building as a base for our operations as well as continue to provide our normal business activities to our communities,” Aitken said.

“We have put out a tender and expect actual work to start early in the new year. This means we will have to move staff out of the main administration building for about four to six months.”
