Charlotte, North Carolina (AP) – The Bible literally appeared to many Catholic churches in North Carolina as a rare earthquake shook parts of the state over the weekend.

According to a press release issued by the Archdiocese of Charlotte, Father Richard Sauter of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church said that the teacher in Sunday Mass had just reached the nineteenth chapter of the First Kings, a passage from the Bible referring to the prophet Elijah, who said, “After the wind happened An earthquake, but God was not in the earthquake, then parishioners felt that the 5.1-magnitude earthquake was centered near Sparta, the strongest earthquake to hit the state in more than 100 years.

Observers said the 5.1-magnitude quake occurred at 8:07 a.m. after a much smaller quake several hours earlier. No serious injuries were reported, but some minor structural damage was reported in Sparta, as well as cracks in the roads. Pictures on social media also showed bits of grocery store shelves.

The Charlotte Observer reports that although he didn’t feel it himself, Sutter said parishioners came to him as soon as the service ended. He said that the moment could be a lesson for the era.

“When there is fear of an earthquake, when there is fear of a storm, when there is fear of an epidemic and uncertainty … you have to let God speak to us with the truth,” he said. He said, “Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus Christ and not the waves (or even earthquakes) that we cannot control.”

Father Corey Catron, pastor of the Catholic mission in Sparta, said his church was apparently undamaged by the earthquake. “Nevertheless, it was built for good sermon material,” the press release said.

In his sermon, Catron joked about his concern that flames might be the next thing. He described the events as a reminder of the presence of God, adding, “We must not be distracted by the noise and problems of the world around us, but to listen to his voice silently.”

With Mass ending at 11:15 a.m. in Sparta and Catron offered one last blessing, there was a follower of 1.8 degrees. He said, “The ceiling creaked for three seconds, and everyone looked up and immediately we knew what it was.”
