Brad Bird’s 1906 San Francisco Earthquake movie idea might become a miniseries

At San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird revealed that he’s looking to turn his long-in-development project about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake into a miniseries.

This project goes back a long way for Bird, with the first reports suggesting he was considering making it a feature film dating back to 2007. It was supposed to be his live-action debut, but it never happened, with Bird instead making Ghost Protocol.

Bird dismissed what he referred to as “online BS stories” while the film version was shelved due to budget concerns. Instead, he said, it was simply a matter of not being able to figure out how to combine everything he wanted into one film.

As Baird explained, when he began researching the 1906 earthquake, “The deeper you dig, the more things get [I’d find]At a certain point, he felt like he was cutting too much, which is why the miniseries would be a natural fit. Although he cautioned that it would actually need a big budget because it “had to be as big as the movie.”

Bird’s comments about the project were presented during the Brad Bird: My Cinematic Journey panel at SDCC, hosted by Collider EIC Stephen Weintraub. When Weintraub asked how Bird envisioned the miniseries, he said, “Maybe it’s like eight episodes. But it has the biggest buildup ever. It’s not just the earthquake, it’s the fire after the earthquake.”

He went on to say that the fire that followed the earthquake was fueled by giant winds that “must have been as strong as a storm.”

It is understood that most of the panel was focused on Bird’s next project, a Ray Gunn animated film that will be released on Netflix this fall. Incredibles 3 was also mentioned, with composer Michael Giacchino, Bird’s long-time collaborator (who also scored Spider-Man: Brand New Day), making a surprise appearance. Bird has confirmed that Incredibles 3 will not be directed by Pete Sohn (Elemental), but he is co-writing (along with Dana Murray) and producing the project.

As for Giacchino’s involvement, when the composer sheepishly asked who was doing the score, Bird joked: “The ghost of Jerry Goldsmith,” before replying: “We’ll talk about that.” This is likely confirmation that Giacchino will indeed be returning for the next installment of the Incredibles series.

Bird also mentioned a bit about another project in development, one that will likely take place before the 1906 miniseries. Bird didn’t want to reveal too many details, but said it’s a movie he’s directing. “It’s live action, but there’s animation in it.”
