One person was killed and several were missing after record-breaking rains triggered flooding and landslides on Japan's coast, local authorities said, in the same area hit by a devastating earthquake on New Year's Day.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest emergency warning for Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday, urging residents to take maximum precautions in what it called the heaviest rainfall ever to hit the region. The warning was lowered Sunday morning, but the agency asked residents to remain on high alert.

Heavy rains caused 16 rivers in the region to overflow their banks, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

One person died in the city of Suzu after a landslide swallowed his house, NHK reported. Ishikawa authorities said at least six people were missing and tens of thousands had been evacuated.

Authorities said the storm caused power outages to more than 6,200 homes.

It's an area that has already suffered devastation and misery once this year.

On January 1, a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, killing hundreds of people and causing widespread destruction from which the region is still recovering.

Images showed temporary housing built for people who lost their homes in the quake surrounded by several feet of murky floodwater.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, four workers who were carrying out restoration work in Wajima City disappeared after the quake. The ministry says they may have been caught in landslides.
