Earthquake Awareness Campaign Continues – Davao City Government

Local and national government agencies on Tuesday conducted an Earthquake Education Campaign (IEC) at Barangay Riverside, Kalinan District.

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), in collaboration with the Office of Civil Defense XI (OCD XI), Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), notified residents of Barangay Riverside of active faults in the area.

Staff also distributed flyers and posters to residents, explaining what people should do when an earthquake occurs.

OCD Regional Director Edgar Dayangjirang said the activity was aimed at preparing and warning Dabaoyos residents about the locations of fault lines.

The group conducted its first earthquake assessment in Catalonia Pequeno last year.

Dayangirang said, based on information from the Philippine Public Health Authority, that Barangay Riverside has the largest population that will be affected by the quake.

Paz Bokbok, a resident of Barangay Riverside, said she is grateful that she now knows where the fault lines are.

“Before, when earthquakes happened, it was like nothing. Now that we know there is a fault line, be doubly careful,” said Bokbok.

The Central Davao Fault System consists of five segments, namely the Tamugan Fault, the Lacson Fault, the Dakudao Fault, the Pangayan-Biao Fault, and the New Carmen Fault.

The Dakudao Fault, which cuts across different lands, including the riverbank of the barangay, is 18 kilometers long and can cause a 6.5 magnitude earthquake.

Dayangjirang also urged Dabaoños to heed warnings issued by the Philippine Meteorological Office (PHIVOLCS) and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
