SEATTLE — Residents, businesses and families in Western Washington are gearing up for a “big shake” drill Thursday to prepare for an earthquake scenario that could become a reality in the region.

The Northwest Insurance Council, an insurance agency in Seattle, encouraged Washington residents to “pull out, cover and wait” for an international earthquake drill on Oct. 17 at about 10:15 a.m., according to a news release from the council Tuesday morning. This year's drills will help the public practice earthquake safety within local homes, workplaces and schools.

“It's time to take steps — before disaster strikes — to help protect your home, family and business,” the council said in the news release. “Knowing what to do during an earthquake is critical for personal safety. It's also important to protect your family's financial future, which starts with knowing earthquake and flood insurance.

The council also encouraged the public to consider earthquake insurance to enhance safety preparedness. The following information is provided regarding what you need to know:

• A standard homeowners insurance policy does not cover damage from earthquakes or tsunami flooding. Separate coverage is generally available.

• Earthquake damage to vehicles is covered if owners add optional comprehensive coverage to their car insurance policies.

• A complete inventory of your possessions in the home will help you and your insurance company get through the claims process more quickly.

The northwestern region of the United States has the second-highest earthquake risk, the press release stated. Scientists who study earthquakes and the Earth's interior are called seismologists, according to the Geological Society of America. They collect and use data to understand the causes of this ground-breaking phenomenon, predict future events, and assess risky areas.

“Seismologists say a massive magnitude 8 or 9 earthquake could occur at any time along the Cascadia subduction zone, which extends south from Vancouver Island to Northern California,” the council said in the press release. “Seismologists tell us that western Washington and Oregon are overdue for a major seismic event.”

Recent surveys indicate that only 10% to 20% of insured homeowners in the Seattle area have earthquake insurance.
