Bohol Governor assesses the province's earthquake preparedness

CEBU CITY – Is Bohol prepared to respond in the event of a major earthquake in the province?

Governor Ares Aumentado considered this matter when he recently chaired a meeting attended by various officials in the province.

The meeting was attended by Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Chief Dr. Anthony Damalerio, Bohol Provincial Environmental Management Office Chief Jovincia Janup, and Engr. Ronelita Bonado from the Regional Planning and Development Office.

Aumentado said he called the three officials to the meeting because their offices are the first to respond during emergencies.

The meeting was also attended by Eng. Nolan Evangelista, Officer-in-Charge of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology-Bohol.

During the meeting, Evangelista Aumentado and other Bohol officials were briefed on the current status of the East Bohol Fault from Luay to Sierra Polones Town and the South Offshore Fault Line from Anda to Pamilacan Island and all the way to Siquijor.

“We are praying that the province will be spared from disasters,” Aumentado said. “But as governor, I must make sure that we are prepared in case of a major earthquake because keeping all of Pol Anon from danger is important to me.”

Evangelista said that if a major earthquake occurs in Bohol, it will affect coastal areas in the western part of the province, including Tagbilaran City and Panglao, a major tourist destination.

Aumentado said specific instructions have already been issued to agencies that will be at the forefront of emergency response in the province.

“I think emergency planning plays a big role in our attempt to be a disaster-resilient province,” Aumentado said. “We need people’s support and that’s why we encourage everyone to help each other.”
