Tremors have rocked Maharashtra after a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Telangana

Residents of Nagpur and Gadchiroli districts experienced earthquakes on Wednesday morning after a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Mulugu in Telangana at 7:27 am, officials said.

According to the National Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred in Mulugu, leading to mild tremors being felt in Nagpur. Sources from the India Meteorological Department confirmed the tremors, which were also reported by local residents.

Gadchiroli, located near the Telangana border, also reported mild shocks, the district information office said. IMD officials explained that mild tremors can usually be felt within a range of 200 to 300 kilometers from the epicenter.

Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. Authorities are currently assessing the situation, while experts recommend residents remain alert and avoid crowded or unsafe buildings during earthquakes. We advise residents to remain alert in anticipation of aftershocks.

Seismic activity is rare in Telangana, which is classified as Zone II, indicating a low level of seismic activity. In India, seismic zones range from II (least serious) to V (highest), with approximately 59% of the country vulnerable to earthquakes of varying intensity.

In related news, a separate 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck Karbi Anglong district in Assam on November 30 at around 2:40 am, and a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir on November 28. There were no reports of casualties or damage in either case.
