Cruise ships change plans after Vanuatu earthquake: Travel Weekly

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Corp brands will shift calls away from Port Vila, Vanuatu, in the coming weeks after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the South Pacific island nation on December 17.

At least 14 people were killed and 200 others were injured as a result of the earthquake and its aftershocks, which also caused landslides and the collapse of buildings, according to the BBC. Local police said that a state of emergency had been declared to limit the movement of people while rescue operations continued. The death toll is expected to rise.

Four cruise ships were due to arrive in Port Vila in the next few days, but their routes were changed to avoid the area.

Royal Caribbean said the ship Quantum of the Seas chose to skip a call in Port Vila on Wednesday and remain on Mestre Island in Vanuatu for a second day. Quantum is then scheduled to return to Port Vila on Christmas Eve.

Carnival Corp has three ships scheduled to arrive in Port Vila over the next week. P&O Australia's Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure cruises, sailing 10-day round-trip Christmas voyages out of Australia, were scheduled to arrive in Port Vila on 21 and 22 December respectively. Instead, they will be diverted and spend an extra day at sea.

The Carnival Luminosa, sailing a seven-day round trip cruise from Brisbane, Australia, is scheduled to arrive in Port Vila on 23 December. Instead you will stop at Mystery Island.

Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth will no longer call at Port Vila on 28 December on a cruise departing from Sydney and stopping at Levou Island, New Caledonia, before her scheduled visit to Port Vila. Instead, the ship will remain at sea.
