Following the June 24 earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 (18:00 local time), authorities reported more than 940 aftershocks. At least seven (7) states were affected. La Guaira remains the most affected state. The official toll: 2,954 dead and 16,592 wounded. A total of 6,462 people were rescued. Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams remain deployed in affected areas, in coordination with OCHA, more than a week after the earthquakes. The United Nations system and its partner organizations, in coordination with the Government, are responding with multi-sectoral actions and will continue to increase assistance to affected people.

Situation overview

Venezuela is facing a national emergency following two successive earthquakes of magnitude (7.2 and 7.5) that struck on June 24 (18:00 local time) in the north-central region, with the epicenter located along the San Felipe-Yumari-Montalban (Yaracuy/Carabobo) axis. Authorities reported 942 aftershocks.

More than a week after the earthquakes, authorities reported that the death toll had reached 2,954 people, 16,592 people were injured, and 6,462 people had been rescued since the beginning of the emergency. Authorities also reported that approximately 16,309 people lost their homes.

The government’s response remains focused on search and rescue operations, preparing and expanding transitional camps, and providing assistance to affected populations. La Guaira remains the most affected state. The United Nations and its partner organizations, in coordination with the authorities, are implementing multi-sectoral response activities and will continue to expand assistance to affected people.
