The Duke and Duchess of Sussex received a warm welcome upon arrival at Sydney Harbor as they prepared to begin their boat tour with Invictus Australia.

The Duke of Sussex will no longer bring Duchess Meghan and their children with him during his London visit, a representative for Harry confirmed to USA TODAY on Saturday, July 4.

The decision comes amid ongoing discussions about what security measures should be in place for the family after their controversial retreat from royal life.

That doesn’t mean Meghan, 44, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, won’t be accompanying Harry, 41, on the trip at all. The remaining travel arrangements are still being reviewed, his spokeswoman said. Meghan and the children may join Harry as he leaves London for his engagement up north.

The decision follows confirmation that the Sussexes will not be provided with taxpayer-funded police security during their five-day trip.

The last time Harry and Meghan were in the UK together was in September 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, which marked the end of the queen’s 70-year reign.

Prince Harry has previously said he has not brought Meghan and their children back to the UK because of concerns about his family’s safety, citing the loss of taxpayer-funded security after stepping down from royal duties in 2020.

Last month, Prince Harry and Meghan accepted the king’s offer to stay at the royal residence with access to royal security. The royal residence has not been disclosed. The family had been offered accommodation at Buckingham Palace in the past, but had declined it.

“The issue was never about accommodation,” a spokesperson for the duke told USA Today on June 29. “The issue is whether adequate and proportionate protective security is provided throughout the visit.”

Prince Harry has long raised concerns about the safety of his loved ones, telling the BBC last year: “I can’t imagine a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point.”
