Tibet earthquake once again highlights fragile Himalayan region Charts

On January 7, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Tengri in China's Tibet region. The impact was felt in parts of Nepal, Bhutan and India. The earthquake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, forcing thousands to evacuate and trapping many of them under the rubble.

The Himalayan region has always been vulnerable to earthquakes due to the movement of the Indian plate against the Eurasian plate. The region was particularly hard hit in 2005 and 2015. In the 2015 earthquake, more than 9,000 people were killed. In 2005, more than 1,300 people died after an earthquake in October.

Most earthquakes in the region range in magnitude from 4 to 4.9, with only two earthquakes measuring 8 or higher.

These two earthquakes occurred in 1934 and 1950. The map below shows some of the larger earthquakes in the region from 1908 to 2025. The Eurasian-Indian plate boundary extends across northern parts of India, making the surrounding areas vulnerable to earthquakes.

While most earthquakes in the region register at a lower magnitude, some earthquakes can be severe. For example, the 2005 earthquake resulted in a surface rupture that extended 75 kilometers, which was unprecedented at the time for earthquakes in the Himalayan region, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.

Other effects of earthquakes include floods caused by glacial lakes (which are increasing in size, according to ISRO satellite reports) and landslides. These effects become more severe when large dams are exposed to earthquakes.
