Ten people share ‘public shock’ over reports of convicted smuggler living in UK | Immigration and Asylum

Downing Street said it shared the “public’s shock” at reports that a convicted smuggler was living in the UK and the situation was being urgently investigated.

The man, once labeled the ‘godfather’ of the Calais migrant camp, was traced by the BBC to Leicestershire, where he is said to have changed his name from Twana Jamal and was working illegally as he attempted to claim asylum.

He was reportedly sentenced to five years in prison in France in 2019, where prosecutors said he earned up to £100,000 a week for moving people across the Channel.

The case is one of two that have led to questions about whether Britain’s system allows for the deportation of foreign criminals after a legal loophole was revealed on Thursday that meant the leader of a Rochdale grooming gang could not be deported after being released from prison.

A Number 10 spokesperson told reporters: “We are limited in what we can say about individual cases. However, we share the public’s shock at these reports and are working urgently to establish the facts.”

“We will not tolerate abuses of our immigration system, which is why we are deporting people who have no right to be here at the highest rates in nearly a decade.”

Chris Philp, the Conservative shadow home secretary, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “This shines a light on a system that doesn’t work. So many people are entering our country illegally and we don’t know who many of them really are. The man tracked down in Leicestershire should be arrested by police on suspicion of illegal work and authorities should quash all claims against him.”

Philip claimed the man would be deported under a Conservative government. “But if we try to do that, he is likely to make a human rights argument,” he added.

Skills Secretary Jacqui Smith said the Home Office had been in contact with the BBC and wanted “the evidence it needs to take action”.

She told the BBC: “I am not sure that has fully happened, but I am confident that what the Home Office wants will happen.”

The BBC reported that it had discovered more than 20 active smugglers arriving in the UK, and that immigration officials said it had become more difficult to check criminal records from some other countries since Britain left the EU.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Despite multiple requests for verification, the BBC has failed to provide evidence to substantiate the claims in this report.”

It emerged on Tuesday that survivors of a Rochdale grooming gang ringleader were told he was due to be released from prison this week and could not be deported.

Shabir Ahmed, 73, known to his victims as ‘Dad’, was found guilty of several counts of rape and sexual offenses against girls in 2012.

Ahmed had dual British-Pakistani citizenship and was stripped of his British citizenship after his conviction. But an online document apparently sent by the Probation Service to one of the victims says he cannot be deported to Pakistan under the provisions of the Immigration Act 1971.
