Officials warn of aftershocks after a strong earthquake struck southern Japan

TOKYO – Japanese authorities warned residents to remain alert in anticipation of strong tremors in the coming days after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan this week.

The quake occurred at 9:19 p.m. Monday in the Hyuganada Sea, about 12 miles east-southeast of Miyazaki Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency said in a press release that night that the earthquake registered a maximum seismic magnitude of less than 5 on the Japanese seismic scale in the city of Miyazaki and the towns of Takanabe and Shintomi. Seismic intensities ranging from 1 to 4 were recorded across central and western Japan.

Officials warned that similar tremors could occur soon.

“Please be careful of earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of less than 5 in the next week or so, especially in the next two or three days,” the agency said.

The quake triggered aftershocks and a small tsunami, with waves up to 8 inches high being detected in parts of Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. Tsunami warnings were issued but were later lifted.

Monday's quake came months after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Hyuganada Sea in August, prompting the agency to issue its first-ever warning of a strong earthquake in the Nankai Basin. This advisory has since been withdrawn.

The Nankai Basin, a geological fault extending from Suruga Bay near Shizuoka Prefecture to the Hyuganada Sea, is an area of ​​significant seismic activity. The Philippine Sea plate is subducting beneath the Eurasian plate at a rate of several centimeters per year, causing pressure to build up until it triggers massive earthquakes, according to the agency.

Historically, the Nankai Basin experiences massive earthquakes every 100 to 150 years, with the last major event occurring approximately 80 years ago.

Following Monday's earthquake, an expert committee was formed to assess the possibility of another major earthquake. Later on Monday, the committee concluded that the probability of a strong earthquake along the trough remains unchanged.

“Even under normal conditions, there is a 70% to 80% chance of a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake occurring along the Nankai Basin within the next 30 years,” the agency warned.

Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant.

“It is important to keep in mind that an earthquake could happen at any time and to make sure you are prepared on a daily basis,” the agency stated.
