Neighbors to our east experience a small earthquake near Lafayette Friday, January 24, 2025 – Discover Dead

There was a small 2.3 earthquake to our east in Walker County near Lafayette, GA on Friday evening around 7pm. Some felt a little baby rattle and others heard some screaming, but no damage was reported according to the United States Geological Survey (US). However, there have been several small earthquakes in the area over the past 5 or 6 months (see graphics).

Fortunately for us, earthquakes, especially larger ones, are usually in states like California or Alaska, not here. However, small earthquakes are fairly common in Georgia, and we typically experience between 10 and 20 with a magnitude above 2.0 per year, according to Andy Newman, professor of geophysics at Georgia Tech.

Regarding the causes of these earthquakes, experts don't really know. What is known is that our counties sit at the end of an active zone known as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, which regularly experiences small earthquakes. According to the USGS, our earthquakes tend to be more shallow and not as deep as other areas of Georgia, which does not necessarily mean they will be a precursor to a larger event.
