The genius new Android phone feature can save lives with earthquake warnings

Google recently developed a new feature for Android that can send alerts about an impending earthquake and even use your phone as a small seismometer, along with millions of others, to create the largest earthquake detection network in the world.

This was just revealed in the latest Google blog post and it’s pretty cool.

The first part of the news saw Google collaborate with the US Geological Survey and the California Governor’s Office for Emergency Services so that earthquake alerts are sent directly to Android devices. In this first phase, this will only apply in California.

This system, powered by ShakeAlert, uses 700 seismometers installed throughout California. Warnings may only send a warning of a few seconds long, but this may suffice. As Google explains it in a video on its blog: “Once the tremor is detected, an alert is sent to your Android device, giving you precious seconds to find a safer cover or floor. After an earthquake, the phone sends notes to help us learn more about earthquakes so we can be More prepared for the next earthquake. “

That’s pretty cool, but Google goes further. As he points out, this large-scale seismometer network is not universally available around the world, so it uses a tiny duohike, the accelerometer in your smartphone, to create the largest seismic network in the world.

Google explains it this way: “If the phone detects something it thinks might be an earthquake, it sends a signal to our earthquake detection server, along with an approximate location of where the shaking is occurring. The server then collects the information from several phones to see if an earthquake is occurring. Or not, we’re basically racing against the speed of light (which is roughly the speed at which the signals from our phone are transmitted) versus the speed of an earthquake. Luckily for us, the speed of light is much faster! “

It’s an exciting technology that is expected to reach far beyond California in the coming year.

Meanwhile, after the earthquake, if you use your Android phone to search for “Earthquake” or “Earthquake near me”, Google will display the relevant results.
