Cooking meals for survivors from the earthquake in Hatay Türkiye

Starting with Hitchhiking during his university years, Erkan Orhan traveled to 24 countries and many cities. His last stop is “Gönül Mutfağı” in Hatay, south of Torke, which was established after February 6, 2023, earthquakes focusing on KahramanMara.

Erkan Orhan, 27, from Gazianb, began his journey after accepting the Department of Human Resources Management at Gurum University. He initially traveled to different cities in Türkiye, where he scored his trips and created content for social media.

Orhan gained many followers through his content and started campaigns to collect and distribute games for children. In addition to traveling inside Türkiye, he visited many countries while he was wandering on the Erasmus program.

Since his graduation in 2021, Orhan has continued his flights, visiting 24 countries and many cities across Europe, Asia and Africa. He was in Gaziante when she hit earthquakes on February 6, 2023. After securing the safety of his family, Orhan joined one of the relief convoys heading to Hatay.

Two years ago, Orhan came to the city to help those affected by the disaster. Work began at “Gönül Mutfağı” in ̇skenderun, a kitchen created by volunteers after the earthquake. Orhan volunteers in the kitchen do everything from cooking to distribution.

Orhan shared that he discovered “Gönül Mutfağı” through a friend's social media post. He stated that he traveled to more than 60 cities in Türkiye and 24 countries and expressed his pride that he was part of the project.

Orhan, also one of the survivors of the earthquake, explained, “After the February 6 earthquake, my family stayed abroad for about a week. Once they moved to a safe place, I immediately got the first car in the morning and came to ISKenderun.

He said that Hatay was more severely affected by the earthquake than Gaziante, adding: “Someone needed to heal this wound. Why shouldn't we? That's why I set out and reached Hatay on February 14. I was here for two years and will continue to stay here.”

“I have recovered, and helped others to heal as well. Since the first day, I participated in any work to do. Whether it's cleaning, cooking or washing utensils, we do everything that is required,” he added.

Orhan also learned how to cook with “Gönül Mutfağı” while supporting the disaster affected.

Orhan explained that the burden of work in the kitchen is intense, as 70,000 meals were prepared on average and distributed daily. He pointed out: “I learned how to cook wide meals here. I learned how to reach a larger audience. This was an incredible experience for me. Traveling and seeing the world makes me feel comfortable, but” Gönül Mutfağı “heal me more than traveling and feel better.”
