Phivolcs, JICA to reconsider the study on “The Big One”
Manila, the Philippines – The Philippine government and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are currently talking talks next year in 2004 on the influence of “The Big One” or a 7.2 -sized earthquake in Metro Manila.
“We have no idea yet when in 2026, but you will definitely start next year,” Terisito Baculcole, Director of the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology, said at the news forum in the city of Sabt in the city of Kwazon yesterday.
The 21 -year -old study expected deaths on the Manila Metro, whose population is 9.9 million, up to 33,500 people, along with 113,600 injuries. When nearby provinces are included, the death toll can reach 48,000.
“The Big One” is a scenario for a huge earthquake in the case of Marikina Valley, which extends from Doña Remedios Trinidad in Plackcan to Canlubang in Laguna, moving.
Pacolcol said that the study should be reviewed since a lot has been reviewed in the Manila Metro during the past 21 years.
“The population of the Metro Manila has grown and there are many new buildings, so we really need to reconsider the study.”
He said that the new study will be completed within two years.
“We are waiting for some signatures, but next year we will start,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bacolcol “The Big One” said it could also lead to the Taal Berkan eruption in Batanjas.
In response to a question about the potential influence, he said it might be similar to the main explosion of Taal in 2020.
Better discovery
With an error responsible for a powerful 6.9 earthquake in Sebu now identified, Phivolcs said it is working to overcome obstacles in determining active errors abroad.
The office named the Bugo Bay's mistake, with its internal extension in Citio Locke in Braangai Nilon, the city of Bugo.
Phivolcs field investigation found open cracks, a crack and small pressure tools in the area, indicating that the error may extend to 1.5 km.
Some scientists have emphasized the importance of appointing active errors abroad not only for academic purposes but also to improve disasters.
Before announcing this discovery, Bacolcol The Star told Friday that it represents a tremendous challenge to seismologists to determine the active mistakes abroad despite the current technology.
He said in an interview on the phone: “There are audio equipment available to wipe our bodies to water, but the challenge is that they are very wide,” adding that the office currently uses satellite images for this purpose.
He said Phivolcs focuses on setting internal active errors to provide relevant information to the public about the location of its properties.
Renato Soldum JR. , However, that the active errors abroad are not a great concern, because the division of seismic areas in the country indicates that the entire Philippines are at risk of earthquakes.
Only the provinces under the region 2- Balouan (with the exception of the town of Busuanga), Solo, and Tawyeh-have a lower possibility of experimenting with the harmful land movement.
All other areas are located within the 4th region, where earthquakes occur and can cause great destruction.
The Filipino Solidum advised to take proactive steps to prepare for earthquakes and enhance structures to prevent collapse.
On Friday, on the sidelines of the Balik Program Agreement in the city of Pasay, he said: “Even if you do not plan the error there, if you are thinking about the construction code … as long as you follow the design, materials and articles, you are probably guaranteed that the building will not collapse.”
Solidum said that the provinces should always assume that the mistakes, whether they are appointed or unlimited, are present in their areas.
“We used to say all the time, in 2014, that Sebo needed to prepare for a strong earthquake as it is passed by many active mistakes. Just like Bououl, there are errors abroad that we need to prepare for it.”
He added: “If we assume that there are external errors, it is clear that any earthquake may cause consideration.”
to update
However, Bacolcol said the office aims to employ more experts to determine active errors abroad under the Phivolcs Law.
Through the Republic’s Law 12180, Phivolcs will receive 7 billion P for five years to upgrade equipment, add earthquake and volcanic monitoring stations, enhance human resources and expand public education on geological risks.
However, MP Laguna Loreto Ammanti admitted during a hearing in the House of Representatives on Thursday for the proposed DOST budget for the year 2026 that there is no funding for phifolcs update.
Amante explained that the agencies are their budgets between February and March, so the office's plans did not make this reduction because the law entered April. He said, however, that hope has not yet been lost.
Solium said it was exploring potential cooperation with international partners if the funding is not secured for the next year.
Examine
In order to verify whether the houses or buildings are safe from earthquakes, Dost said that a four -year -old simple tool with Japanese experts can be useful.
“How safe is my home?” The app-Available on applications and access it via the Internet: //howSafeismyhouse.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph- is a self-evaluation tool that asks users 12 questions to determine whether the structure can stand up to the earthquake.
The application was released in 2021, a cooperative project between Phivolcs, the National Institute for Earth Sciences and Disaster Prevention, Jika, Japanese Science and Technology and the Association of Structural Engineers in the Philippines.
“Try to answer 12 questions related to the standard materials that you need to use, or the building age, the state of the building, the state of the building or the home, and even the way it was built or workmanship,” said the Soldum The Star.
Encourage local government units to use the tool to determine the structures exposed to strong earthquakes. EJ Macabbad
