SCETV to broadcast live press conference for South Carolina Earthquake Preparedness Week and participate in Great ShakeOut earthquake drill | Stories | October 14, 2025

South Carolina ETV and Public Broadcasting (SCETV) will live stream a news conference hosted by the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) on October 15 at 10 a.m. at the South Carolina Emergency Operations Center in West Columbia. The press conference will feature leaders of emergency management and state agencies discussing South Carolina Earthquake Preparedness Week, which will be held October 12-18, and previewing upcoming Southeastern earthquake safety drills.

Governor Henry McMaster has declared October 12-18, 2025, as Earthquake Preparedness Week in South Carolina. The week serves as a reminder for residents to learn more about the state's seismic fault system and how to prepare for potential earthquakes.

During the press conference, Major General Robin Stilwell, commanding general of the South Carolina National Guard, SCEMD Director Kim Stinson, SCEMD Director Michael Wise and State Geologist Scott Howard will be joined to share updates on earthquake awareness, preparation tools and safety procedures.

A highlight of the week is the Great Southeast ShakeOut, scheduled for October 16 at 10:16 a.m. More than 1.8 million participants across eight states and Washington, D.C., are expected to join this regional earthquake safety training, part of an international campaign to teach the three key steps to staying safe during an earthquake:

Get down on your hands and knees, covering your head and neck with one arm and a hand as you crawl for shelter under a table or desk, and hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops.

People with limited mobility can also practice earthquake safety in ways appropriate to their condition. Schools, businesses, government agencies and families across South Carolina are encouraged to register and participate at Shakout.org/southeast.

So far in 2025, more than a dozen low-magnitude earthquakes have been recorded in South Carolina. Geologists at the College of Charleston report that the state typically experiences 10 to 20 earthquakes each year.

SCETV's emergency response communications and weather reporting efforts extend across the state. SCETV closely monitors evolving weather conditions, ensuring timely updates during weather events through statewide multi-platform coverage. Leveraging the South Carolina Emergency Information Network (SCEIN), a partnership with WUFT in Gainesville, Florida, SCETV regularly provides important updates across its broadcast television and radio networks, on social media and online. Additionally, in collaboration with SCEMD and the Governor's Office, SCETV broadcasts and live streams statewide news conferences and provides the latest information on state government office closures. For weather updates and preparedness resources, visit SCETV's dedicated weather page at SCETV.org/weather.

South Carolina's Official Earthquake Guide contains checklists and preparedness tips; Additional resources are available at Earthquake.sc. The SC Emergency Manager mobile app also includes an earthquake map and allows users to sign up for alerts when seismic activity occurs. The app is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
