Marylanders were encouraged to participate in the Great Shake

Drop, cover and hold during Thursday's warm-up practice at 10:16 a.m

Hanover, MD (October 14, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) is proud to enhance earthquake preparedness and encourages Marylanders to participate in major earthquake drills taking place across the country on October 16 at 10:16 a.m. local time. More than 98,000 people representing about 50 organizations, including individuals and families from Maryland, had registered as of Friday afternoon. Others are encouraged to register here before the workout begins.

“Although earthquakes are not common in Maryland, events like the one that occurred in Mineral, Virginia on August 23, 2011, can be felt throughout Maryland. A major aftershock is an opportunity for Marylanders to practice what they should and should not do during a disaster.
