The drama as part of a Manchester city center building collapsed during demolition work as debris fell into the River Irwell

Witnesses have spoken of their shock after part of a building being demolished collapsed in Manchester city centre, describing how they initially thought it was an earthquake.

It is understood the building, Alberton House off Bridge Street, was due for demolition. Part of it collapsed this afternoon (Friday) as scaffolding fell into the River Irwell.

A person working nearby said there was a “strong earthquake-like feeling” and surrounding buildings were evacuated, with firefighters at the scene.

Another witness added: “We were shaking and did not know if the building was going to collapse, then we saw the plumes of dust.”

George Jones, founder and owner of Cardinal House next door to the collapsed building, told MEN: “We had to evacuate, about 500 people had to leave throughout the day, and I have many businesses here. We have been aware of the renovations for some time, but we were never told that we would be afraid for safety or need to evacuate.”

“It sounded like an earthquake. People left because they didn't feel safe. When we then went to talk to the workers they asked us to evacuate the building.

“The scaffolding fell into the river and the building was moving. I bought my building and turned it into a business center two years ago. When I came out it looked like it was all smoke.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of scaffolding collapse. The building was being demolished at the time.

There were no reports of injuries. The fire service has now left the scene.

The fire service said a fire engine from Manchester Central attended St Mary's Church just after 2.50pm today after scaffolding at a building that had been partially demolished collapsed.
