Darwin wakes up to the shaking from a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea

People across the top of the Northern Territory have been woken up by tremors in the early hours of this morning as a result of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake, which was at a depth of 135 km, occurred just after midnight in the Banda Sea near East Timor, about 600 km from Darwin.

Data released by Geoscience Australia shows the tremor was mostly felt by residents of the city of Darwin and the northern suburbs. However, there have also been reports throughout the rural region, and as far as Kununurra, Western Australia.

Shortly after the earthquake, the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there was no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.

Speaking to ABC Radio Darwin, Geoscience Australia's chief seismologist Phil Cummins said his team had already received “more than 800 felt reports” linked to the quake, via his website.

Dr. Cummins said the epicenter of the earthquake was located in a “tectonically active” area, so earthquakes are expected in this area, and aftershocks are expected.

“I expect aftershocks after this earthquake, but I doubt they will be felt as far away as Darwin,” Dr Cummins said.

“The basic rule is that they… [aftershocks] “It may be a unit smaller than the main shock.”

Joey, a second-year law student at Charles Darwin University, told local ABC radio the moment he felt the earthquake while studying.

“I was sitting on my bed doing a task in my own world, and I felt a vibration, which made me get up,” he said.

“I had a drink at the table, and I just went over to the drink and saw it was shaking very quickly.

“I think it went on for about 90 seconds.”
