More than ten earthquakes struck Russia in a 24-hour period: what you need to know
Nearly two dozen earthquakes have struck off the coast of Russia, near the Kamchatka Peninsula, in the past 24 hours, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The strength of the tremors ranged from 4.3 to 6.1 degrees, and the latter is considered a strong earthquake that could cause damage to populated areas.
No injuries, deaths or destruction were immediately reported, and no tsunami warning was issued following Monday's series of earthquakes.
The region has witnessed frequent seismic activity over the past few months, with a strong 8.8-magnitude earthquake occurring on July 29, which led to tsunami warnings being issued along the west coast of the United States.
Why does it matter?
The Kamchatka Peninsula is among the most seismically active areas in the world, located at the tectonic boundary where the Pacific plate subducts beneath the Sea of Okhotsk plate along the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench.
The latest series of quakes came on the heels of a quake that struck in late July, which was the sixth most powerful quake ever recorded by modern instruments.
The series of aftershocks and seismic events highlight the continuing geophysical risks facing Kamchatka and underscore the importance of international scientific oversight and risk preparedness, especially for surrounding Pacific nations and U.S. interests on the West Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska.
What do you know?
The US Geological Survey recorded 22 separate earthquakes around the Kamchatka Peninsula on November 2 and 3. The strength of these earthquakes varied, with some being strong enough to be felt locally, potentially exacerbating landslide and tsunami risks.
At 7:25 PM EDT on July 29, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the shores of Kamchatka. The rupture zone measured about 300 miles by 100 miles, with the fault slipping up to 30 feet.
The quake struck at a depth of about 12 miles and displaced the seafloor vertically, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuations across the Pacific Ocean, with warnings affecting communities in Russia, Japan, Canada, Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States.
This massive earthquake triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific and triggered a rare set of simultaneous volcanic eruptions in the region, while the 2010 Chilean earthquake and the 1906 tremors in Ecuador and Colombia tied for the sixth most powerful earthquake ever measured.
Seven volcanoes in Kamchatka erupted for the first time in nearly three centuries, including Klyuchevskoe and Krasheninnikov. Researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences attributed the volcanic surge directly to the sequence of seismic shocks. The southern peninsula reportedly moved up to 6 1/2 feet to the southeast during the quake.
USGS scientists, in forecasts issued days after July 29, predicted a high probability of sustained aftershocks — including a 24 percent chance of other earthquakes of magnitude 7 or stronger and a more than 99 percent chance of earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater in the coming weeks and months.
What people say
William Yeak, a USGS seismologist, said in a forecast after the July 29 quake: “Quickly understanding the magnitude, location, and triggering mechanism of the earthquake is critical for agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to issue accurate tsunami warnings and for the USGS to estimate earthquake-related impacts.”
What happens next
Seismic monitoring will continue in Kamchatka, as scientists expect more aftershocks in the foreseeable future, with the US Geological Survey and Russian scientific agencies providing continuous updates.
Governments and emergency services remain on alert for additional seismic or volcanic risks.
The evolving nature of aftershocks and renewed volcanic activity highlights the continuing risks to local populations and international coastal areas associated with the Pacific region.
